Toi Paematua: Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 5)

About the course

Toi Paematua: Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 5) is a Ngā Toi Māori programme consisting of 120 credits. This qualification is intended for practitioners seeking to broaden operational, technical and theoretical knowledge, consistent with tikanga and reo, in one of the following fields of Ngā Toi:

  • Whakairo,
  • Ngā Mahi ā te Whare Pora,
  • Toi Ataata,
  • Mau Rākau,
  • Māori Performing Arts.

Toi Paematua: Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 5) is underpinned by Māori philosophies, Māori principles and Mātauranga Māori. The understanding and application of appropriate tikanga and kawa to toi practice is integral to this programme.

The intention of this focus is to develop practitioners who are ethical and responsible kaitiaki of their kaupapa toi. In addition to gaining new artistic skills and techniques, Toi Paematua students will be intrinsically rewarded, as they gain a deeper understanding of themselves and Te Ao Māori.

Graduates of this qualification will contribute to New Zealand as self-managing practitioners of Ngā Toi within defined contexts able to complete projects, and assist in the management, leadership, and kaitiakitanga of Ngā Toi.
