Kāwai Raupapa: Certificate in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 4)

About the course

Kawai Raupapa (Level 4) provides a pathway for those seeking to further develop their toi skills and knowledge in one of the following fields of Nga Toi - Whakairo, Nga mahi a te Whare Pora, Toi Ataata, Mau Rakau, or Maori Performing Arts. Engagement with appropriate tikanga and kawa, matauranga Maori, Maori values and principles is an integral part of this programme. This will be reflected in the delivery and content.

Through practice, self-reflection and guidance tauira will increase their skills and understanding of how to improve their toi practice. They will develop their project-planning, observational, communication, expressive and reflective skills. Through the creation of creative work and an analysis of their own and other artists' work, tauira will also extend their understanding and appreciation of their chosen kaupapa toi (area of specialty).

The toi principles of Toi Raupapa (Organisation), Toi Iro (Exploration), Toi Awe (Creative Practices), Toi Hanga (Creation), Toi Aro (Reflection) and Toi Hua (Completed work) are embedded within this holistic programme. This programme requires tauira to demonstrate their understanding of an art form (Kaupapa Toi) through the completion of a project or projects. This practical approach requires tauira to reflect (Toi Aro) during the creative process (Toi Awe), to explore their sources of inspiration (Toi Iro) and to demonstrate the appropriate tikanga and toi practices (Toi Raupapa). Through the creating of toi project/s (Toi Hanga) a finished product/s (Toi Hua) is achieved and the required learning outcomes met.
