About the course

Your path to a career in data tech.

This is for anyone interested in working with data to enable businesses, communities, consumers and customers to make better decisions. If you are analytical and enjoy finding ways to use data to improve business performance, then this pathway is for you.

To join this pathway, previous knowledge of SQL or R or Python is preferred. This programme will give you a leg up to get experience and connections in the industry.

 As a Data Analyst, you will gain skills in the following:

Load and clean real-world data

Make reliable statistical inferences from noisy data

Use machine learning to create prediction models

Visualise complex data

Assess emerging tech and ethical decisions 


Get trained by industry experts through industry-simulated projects with our delivery partner Mission Ready.

In just 19 weeks, you will gain confidence as a tech professional, get professionally certified and build your portfolio to stand out as a future talent in the tech industry. 

You will:

  • specialise in your chosen tech career
  • develop the latest professional and tech skills needed to successfully transition into a tech career.

This Otago Polytechnic training scheme is delivered in partnership with Mission Ready HQ. 

It's designed for digital tech professionals looking to gain additional skills or professional expertise to successfully upskill and transition to a highly-skilled role in tech.

Entry requirements

To join this pathway, previous knowledge of SQL or R or Python is preferred.



Applicants must have the legal right to study in New Zealand and either:

  • have completed the Certificate in Technology Product Development Essentials (Level 4) Training Scheme, or
  • provide evidence of an equivalent qualification and/or experience.
International students will be individually assessed to ensure you are ready for this study. 
Otago Polytechnic’s policy AP0520.03 English Language Requirements for Those for whom English is an Additional Language applies.


If English is not your first language, you must provide:

  • New Zealand University Entrance, or
  • Overall Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band score lower than 5.0 (achieved in one test completed in the last two years), or
  • Acceptable alternative evidence of the required IELTS (see here for NZQA proficiency table and here for list of recognised proficiency tests).

Instead of just theoretical knowledge, participants work on real-world projects to apply what they’ve learned and build a portfolio. So at the end of the programme, you can also show employers your work experience.

Mentorship & work experience‍

Employers want people with prior work experience. Our unique mentored work experiences pairs candidates with mentors from our 220+ industry partners. These mentors offer guidance, feedback, and insights from their own experiences. Candidates can list this work experience in their CV and LinkedIn profiles, and often our mentors also agree to be a reference during the job search phase.
