About the course
During this programme you will learn how to use plumbing hand tools and equipment in our purpose-built plumbing workshop as you develop installation and maintenance skills and learn about appliances, fixtures and fittings.
The theoretical knowledge and practical skills you’ll acquire will reflect a diverse range of skills such as:
- Introduction to health and safety
- Sanitary (foul water) systems
- Hot and cold water supply systems
- Sanitary appliance, fixture and valve installation and maintenance
- Sheet metal work
- Roof plumbing
- Welding and brazing
- Gas and combustion theory and practice including heating and ventilating
- Gas pipes, appliances and devices
- Building, construction and service integration

Standard Entry Requirements
- Meet the NCEA Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirements, or provide evidence of achievement at an equivalent level.
Non-standard Entry Requirements
- Successful completion of the NZ Certificate in Foundation Studies (Allied Trades) [Level 2] and successful completion of the alternative academic entry test; or
- Successful interview with a member of the academic staff and successful completion of the alternative academic entry test.
The alternative academic entry test will measure the applicants’ literacy and numeracy ability to ensure that it is of a level to cope with the demands of the programme.
The interview will allow both parties to exchange information about what the programme both provides to, and requires of its students. Included in the interview will be discussion of possible career paths for the student, motivation, physical and emotional requirements and the applicants’ abilities, background, experiences and interests. Attendance of whānau members and/or supporting associates is encouraged at all interviews.
All applicants are required to have the physical mobility needed to meet the demands of construction site work.
