About the course
This hands-on programme will teach you how to survive and navigate in the wild following the principles of personal safety and kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection of the environment). The certificate is made up of field-trips as well as land-based and water-based activities. You will also get the opportunity to go on an overnight camping trip and build your own shelter.

The certificate is made up of field-trips as well as land-based and water-based activities. You will also get the opportunity to go on an overnight camping trip and build your own shelter.
This qualification will set you up for a career as a ranger, tourism guide, or for a role in the search and rescue services or defence force.

Academic Requirement
- Achievement of NCEA (Level 1) or equivalent qualification
Standard Entry Requirements
- Minimum age 16 years at the start of the programme.
- An interview may be required.
- Must be physically able to complete programme.
- Must be confident in water and camping outdoors.
English Language Entry Requirements
If English is not your first language a level of English language fluency is required for the programme. This may be demonstrated through successful study of a programme in English, completion of a Level 3 NZ Certificate in English Language, approved scores on IELTS tests (5.0 Academic with no band score lower than 5.0), completion of an EIT assessment.
Entry with Credit
If you wish to claim credit from previous studies or experiences, you can do so by applying for Cross Credit (CC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
- CC is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for CC if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
- RPL is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.
Please identify any credit you may wish to be considered as part of the programme application. Please note recognising prior learning may reduce your study load in this programme and impact on your ability to receive funding.
