Outline

This qualification is for people who want to develop some understanding of tikanga within a specialist field founded on a Māori world-view.

As a graduate of this qualification you will have some knowledge and skills to support and participate in the practice of tikanga under limited supervision.

Subject Areas

  • Learn about, and be immersed in, the traditional indigenous sport of waka ama
  • Te reo me ōna tikanga
  • Fitness and wellbeing for all ages, for whānau, hapū, iwi and local communities and health and safety

The programme will also cover content on:

  • The history behind waka ama – the ancient voyaging and navigation across and around the Pacific Ocean
  • Practical learning of paddling technique, safety procedures and enhancing performance on the water
  • Living a healthy lifestyle

Entry Requirements

You must have completed:

  • The approved foundation programme, Te Pōkaitahi Reo Māori (Reo Rua) | NZ Certificate in Te Reo Māori (Level 2), or
  • Have an equivalent qualification.

English Language Entry Requirements

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of either te reo Māori or English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme.
An interview is part of the acceptance process for international applicants where this will be discussed.

Career and Study Opportunities

Upon graduating you will be able to progress to:

  • Level 3 or 4 Te Reo Māori / Waka Ama programmes, in particular Te Pōkaitahi Tikanga (Waka Ama) | NZ Certificate in Tikanga (Waka Ama) [Level 4].
