About the course
Māori art is a specialist field that is highly sought after nationally and internationally.
Ka Tipu te Whaihanga is a unique certificate which is kaupapa and wānanga based. You will have access to recognised tohunga and leading Māori art specialists across a range of artforms.
Te ao Māori is interwoven throughout the programme and provides a basis for self-expression in the creation of artworks using a variety of mediums.
Programme Outline
Ka Tipu te Whaihanga [Kaupae 4] | NZ Certificate in Ngā Toi [Level 4] will develop your creativity through focusing on Māori art practice and methods. Ākonga at Toihoukura come from all corners of the world, however studies are primarily informed by te reo Māori me ngā tikanga o Te Tairāwhiti.
You will be introduced to a wide range of art disciplines, with a view to specialisation if you opt to continue your Toihoukura journey. Toihoukura’s wānanga based delivery provides the opportunity to link past traditional practices whilst allowing scope for expression in a modern context. Successful completion of Ka Tipu te Whaihanga | NZ Certificate in Ngā Toi enables you to apply directly for the Te Toi o Ngā Rangi | Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts at Toihoukura.
Toihoukura has a busy exhibition schedule for all year levels with shows not only in our own gallery Maia but nationally and internationally. Marae and wānanga based learning continues to be a main focus ensuring our art remains culturally authentic and connected. Upon graduating you will have the skills and knowledge to be able to:
- Produce Māori art works informed by an understanding of design and concepts informed by traditional narratives (mōteatea, waiata and kapahaka) and te reo Māori me ona tikanga.
- Create Māori artworks using safe and effective processes.
- Have a sound academic base to enable you to proceed to degree level study.

Entry Requirements
All applicants must attend an interview with the Principal Tutor(s). A basic art portfolio with drawings or samples is essential.
Academic Requirements
- Applicants will require a minimum of 10 credits NCEA Level 1 from any Literacy sub field or domain. These skills can be assessed in English and te reo Māori.
- For applicants without these NCEA credits or equivalent, a pass in NCEA Level 1 English and/or te reo Māori meets the academic entry requirements, as do NQF qualifications of an equivalent or higher level which demonstrate achievement in these discipline areas.
- Applicants over 20 are classified as mature students. Mature students with life skills and/or work experience who do not meet the stated entry requirements but have the equivalent ability and experience are encouraged to apply.
Māori/English Language Entry Requirements
Applicants will need to demonstrate fluency, at a level sufficient to academically succeed in the course, in either te reo Māori or English.
Applicants who have the language fluency to support it may complete their assessments in te reo Māori.
Applicants from countries in which English is not a primary spoken language, who propose to complete their assessments in English, must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4 Academic), approved scores on IELTS tests (6.0 Academic with no band score lower than 5.5), or completion of either an EIT assessment or accepted international equivalents.
