About the course
The New Zealand Diploma in Horticulture Production (Nursery Production) [Level 5] has been developed with industry to provide specialist technical skills and knowledge in the nursery sector. This diploma programme will provide you with a working knowledge of plant growth techniques, nursery industry standards and management suitable for the plant nursery environment.
EIT has a working nursery environment based in Taradale, Hawke’s Bay and you will visit a range of nursery operations throughout the programme. EIT has connections with industry experts that will enhance your learning and will provide you with relevant industry based knowledge.
As a student of the New Zealand Diploma in Horticulture Production (Nursery Production) [Level 5] you will cover the following:

- Plant Health management
- Planning plant production
- Nursery plant propagation and growing
- Leadership skills
- Plant biology
- Human resource and management skills
- Management of agrichemicals
- Safe working practices in the nursery environment

- Wholesale or retail nursery employment
- Plant propagator
- Nursery assistant manager or manager depending on previous experience
This qualification may build on the NZ Certificate in Horticulture General Level 3 or NZ Certificate in Sustainable Primary Production Level 4.
Entry requirements
ENTRY CRITERIA
In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the NZ Diploma in Horticulture Production (Nursery Production) [Level 5] where they supply evidence to satisfy the Programme Coordinator of their ability to succeed.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT
If English is not your first language you are required to have attained an acceptable level (IELTS 6.0 Academic or equivalent) of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on TOEFL and IELTS test or completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Hawke’s Bay assessment.
