Grow and gather your own kai

This qualification is intended for whānau with an interest in Mahinga Kai – Māori Food Production, Harvesting, and Management. Develop the knowledge and skills so you can grow and gather your own kai for your whānau. Learn the traditional methods from your rohe and be able to pass this knowledge on to future generations.

Career and Study Opportunities

Contribution to community and cultural roles may include involvement in the following:

  • Working as part of a collective to maintain whānau, hapū and community māra kai.
  • Kaimahi harvesting seafood, fishing, hunting, gathering traditional kai to fulfil the manaakitanga obligations and responsibilities to protect the mana and te tino rangatiratanga of the whānau, hapū, iwi and/or hapori.

Continue studying with other programmes such as Reo māori, Toi māori, Māori Environmental Practices, cookery and catering, etc.

Outline

This qualification provides a pathway for graduates to develop capability and capacity to utilise, protect, maintain and enrich Mātauranga Mahinga Kai for whānau, hapū, iwi, and communities for future and current generations.

Learn the traditional methods of growing and collecting kai from the whenua, ngahere, awa and moana, and learn how to prepare and preserve this kai.

Entry Requirements

This is an open entry programme which means no formal qualifications are required. You must be aged 16 or over and you are required to have a reasonable reading level in order to cope with the programme and to carry out written instruction.

This is a practical programme that requires learners to have the physical ability to undertake practical tasks.

English Language Entry Requirements

All applicants for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language will need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English Language Proficiency required for the Programme. Applicants are required to have an IELTS (general or academic) score of 5 with no individual band score lower than 5 from one test taken within the preceding two years, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
