Ka Hao te Rangatahi | Ecological Landcare programme is a combination of the NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) (60 credits over 14 weeks) and NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (Level 3) (50 credits over 15 weeks) courses.

For those aged between 16 and 24, this course comprises of classroom-based work and research on relevant topics, with the majority of the practical training occurring on-job in appropriate outdoor classroom sites within the Waiapu catchment area.

Ecological education elements will be strengthened with online resources available through DOCLearn and other relevant speakers and guests. Additional ecological management training courses will also be delivered via partnering organisations at appropriate times during the training. Value adding and wrap-around context elements will be folded in through relationships with Waiapu Accord partners.

To create a holistic ecological land management programme, funding has been sourced to add additional training elements to this outstanding programme. Full pastoral care for all students will be provided for up to 12 months.

Your future study and career opportunities

As a graduate of this qualification you will have the skills and knowledge to obtain an entry level role in the primary sector, for example, as a pruner, harvester, junior farm assistant, conservation worker, fencer, orchard worker, vineyard hand, assistant gardener or nursery worker.

Entry requirements

The NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) is an open entry programme which means no formal qualifications are required. You must be aged between 16 and 24 at the time the programme commences. You are required to have a reasonable reading level in order to cope with the programme and to carry out written instruction and, be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes.

The NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (Level 3) requires the following:

  • NCEA Level 1; or
  • A qualification at Level 1 or above, with evidence of literacy and numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA (Level 1); or
  • Evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, including literacy and numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA Level 1. (In this case the applicant may be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence).
