New Zealand Diploma in Construction

About the course

This programme prepares you for a senior career in the construction industry as a Construction Manager or Quantity Surveyor depending on which strand you choose to study:

  • Construction Management: Learn to plan, organise, manage and control construction projects.
  • Quantity Surveying: Learn to measure and estimate building work, and carry out financial administration associated with construction projects.

Graduates of the of the Construction Management strand of this programme can continue study in Unitec's Bachelor of Construction (Construction Management) and will be able to work as a:

  • Construction Management technician

With further training and/or experience graduates of this diploma may be able to work as a:

  • Residential or commercial construction site/project manager
  • Contracting construction manager/site/project manager
  • Property manager
  • Contracts supervisor/manager
  • Local or central government building inspector
  • Construction management tutor

Graduates of the of the Quantity Surveying strand of this programme can continue study in Unitec's Bachelor of Construction (Construction Economics) and will be able to work as a:

  • Quantity surveyor

With further training and/or experience graduates of this diploma may be able to work as a:

  • Senior quantity surveyor
  • Registered quantity surveyor
  • Estimator
  • Quantity surveying consultant/contractor
  • Procurement manager
  • Senior/Cost manager
  • Quantity surveying tutor

Entry requirements

For this programme, you will need the following:

1. Achieved one of the below:

  • A total of 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 including 12 credits in Mathematics; or
  • An appropriate qualification at Level 3; or
  • Be at least 20 years old by the time the programme begins AND provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the programme

2. 8 credits at NCEA Level 2 in English (4 in reading, 4 in writing).

3. If English is not your first language, you will need one or more of the following:

  • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University Entrance
  • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
  • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years
