Course details

Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Teaching (Curriculum)
NZQF Level 7

About the course

The Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Teaching (Curriculum) is designed primarily for in-service primary school teachers. It fulfils a need for increased mathematics teaching capabilities across the primary school sector to increase the number of school students proceeding into science and technology specialisations and thinking with evidence. This contributes to the government agenda for increased innovation and entrepreneurship. The programme responds to needs identified by the professional community and employment bodies, most notably:

Increased teacher confidence in their mathematics content knowledge and understanding of the deterministic and stochastic nature of mathematics.

The programme takes the perspective that mathematics can be fun. It models the process of learning mathematics by doing mathematics and encourages critical insight into the effectiveness with which mathematics concepts and principles are embedded into learning experiences. Through the programme practising teachers will become more confident of their mathematics knowledge, and their ability to design and deliver learning experiences that support and inspire students to investigate and understand mathematics knowledge and concepts.
