About the course

The graduate profile of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) is informed by The Teachers Council Guidelines (New Zealand Teachers Council, 2005) and based on the conceptual framework of the Manukau Institute of Technology Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching). The graduate of this programme will have had the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions necessary in a beginning teacher and be ready to begin the process of teacher registration. They will be of good character, and fit to be a teacher (ibid). The graduate will have a positive orientation to learning, orientation to action, and empathy with others. The graduate will have demonstrated the dispositions of trustworthiness, honesty, reliability, sensitivity and compassion, curiosity, imagination, creativity, courage, enthusiasm, perseverance, persistence, dedication, open-mindedness, respect, acceptance of personal responsibility, and preparedness throughout the degree programme of study. In particular the programme aims to graduate teachers who: ? Are independent, autonomous, learners, teachers, and beginning practice based research, who demonstrate self efficacy, and who can advocate for self and others. ? Have a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and understand its implications for early childhood practice. ? Have the knowledge, skill and understanding to work with children and families/wh+ónau within the bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand including capability in te reo M+óori. ? Have the knowledge, skills and understanding to work within a community of practice. ? Behave professionally and ethically and understand the legal responsibilities of teachers. ? Have the knowledge, skill and understanding to develop and maintain responsive, reciprocal, respectful, inclusive, relationships which are focused on childrens learning, with diverse learners, their families, colleagues, and other professionals. ?
