About the course
Upon successful completion of the NMIT Certificate in Conservation (Field Skills), graduates will be able to provide first aid in outdoor situations and implement a safe workplace. Graduates will also be able to discuss the application of the Treaty of Waitangi and traditional M+óori conservation views, as well as the importance of protecting New Zealands biodiversity. Graduates who choose elective courses in structure and track maintenance will be able to assess the safety and standard of huts, tracks, and/or structures. These students will also be able to advise and carry out any improvements that are needed which will prepare them for such roles as a DOC ranger or safety inspection/building compliance officer. Graduates that focus their studies on historic heritage will be able to identify the values of historic sites, as well as recommend and implement the actions needed to protect these areas. These students will also be able to effectively interact and educate the public (including iwi) on the protection and preservation our historic sites. Graduates with this focus would be able to work in various eco-tourism and historic preservation roles. Graduates who choose elective courses in biodiversity will be involved with pest control and/or species work (bioassets). These graduates will be able to undertake appropriate monitoring methods for an area. Depending on the focus of the training, the students will also be able to undertake appropriate pest control or species conservation methods. These graduates will have the skills to monitor and carry out appropriate measures of conservation practice for a site with diverse responsibilities and would be suited for roles in conservation research, ecology consultation or as a DOC ranger.
