About the course
To provide a qualification for entry to careers within the product manufacturing industry that require design and design-related, specialist skills, including new product design and redesign or modification; and design team contribution, in areas of design, design support, product development and manufacture
As well as being qualified for entry into employment in the above areas, graduates will have:
- acquired a recognised basis from which to undertake postgraduate study
- sound knowledge, understanding, and practical experience of the process of design
- understanding of applied research and development processes in product manufacture
- demonstrated practical ability to operate knowledgeably, productively and professionally in an industrial product design working environment
- demonstrated understanding of the complex and dynamic technological, social, economic, cultural and political environments in which industrial product design activities are undertaken
- developed the interpersonal capabilities needed for a career which requires co-operation and participation in teamwork and group decision-making activities
- a clear local, national and international view of industrial design and product manufacturing issues.

Entry requirements
Minimum of 42 NCEA level 3 credits across 4 subjects and literacy (8 NCEA level 2 credits) and numeracy (14 NCEA level 1 credits); or equivalent. Evidence of creative ability to be provided in a submitted portfolio of work.
