About the course

This qualification is designed to enable trainees/apprentices employed in the composites sector of manufacturing to gain recognition for the relevant skills and knowledge required by industry. People who have gained this qualification will be tradespeople composites technicians capable of leading projects and working independently.

People awarded with this qualification are able to plan composite construction projects and apply a range of skills to produce a variety of composite products using a variety of different techniques to meet industry and/or customer standards and specifications.

The compulsory section covers skills and knowledge related to Engineering Drawing and Design, Maintenance and Diagnostics in Mechanical Engineering, Boatbuilding, Industrial Composites, Production Composites, and Manufacturing Processes.

Candidates can customise the elective choices according to their interest or workplace specialisation. Elective A contains technical competencies while Elective B covers quality, communication, and planning competencies.

This qualification shares a significant number of standards with, and builds on, the National Certificate in Composites (Level 3) [Ref: 1157] and also shares a significant number of standards with the National Certificate in Boatbuilding (Level 4) [Ref: 0877].

This qualification and Ref: 1157 provide structured and systematic skill pathways for an area historically classed as process work. Technological advances in fibre reinforced plastics have added new dimensions in terms of product application from a diverse range spanning household, plastics and materials manufacturing and boatbuilding.
