About the course
This qualification is for people who work, or intend to work, in the heavy haulage industry driving specialist heavy haulage vehicles. It recognises that the holder has the knowledge and skills for the safe, lawful, and efficient driving by road of specialist heavy haulage combination vehicles with overdimension and overweight loads. The optional strand allows candidates to extend their skills into the specialist area of transporting abnormal overweight and overdimension loads, which are loads requiring a transport management team on the road.
The holder will be able to plan for transporting an overdimension load and an overweight load, configure a specialist heavy haulage vehicle for transport of a load, transport by road loads not requiring a pilot or overdimension permit, and transport by road overweight, category 1, 2 and 3 overdimension loads requiring a pilot.
In addition, the holder will have demonstrated a range of knowledge and skills that are relevant to overweight and overdimension driving operations and safety. The qualification also provides the opportunity for the holder to demonstrate heavy haulage, driving and commercial road transport knowledge and skills that reflect individual and/or heavy haulage organisational needs.
This qualification reflects the unique needs of the industry sector, and provides a qualification option for drivers who may regard specialist heavy haulage vehicle driving as a significant career milestone.
This qualification shares some unit standards with the National Certificate in Heavy Haulage (Class 1 Pilot) [Ref: 1353], and may lead on from that qualification.
This qualification does not permit the holder to drive a heavy motor vehicle on New Zealand roads. To legally drive a heavy motor vehicle, the driver must be the holder of a current full driver licence applicable to the class of vehicle being used, issued by Land Transport New Zealand.
