Course details

National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2)
NZQF Level 2

About the course

This qualification is designed for people who already have some experience in the wool harvesting industry and who wish to develop shearing skills.

The compulsory section recognises core skills required for wool harvesting industry employees. Qualification holders will have knowledge of hydration, nutrition, and sleep for physical well-being, as well as of care and timeliness, and will be able to protect their own health and safety.

The elective sets recognise the skills required of junior shearers who machine shear either crossbred or fine wool sheep, or who blade shear sheep under supervision. These skills include preparing and sharpening shearing blades under supervision, grinding shearing combs and cutters, and maintaining and rectifying faults in combs. Holders may also have knowledge of a kit of shearing gear.

Candidates may already have completed the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with the Learner Shearer Strand [Ref: 1546] prior to award of this qualification.

On completion of this qualification people can progress to either the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Blade Shearing) (Level 3) [Ref: 1053], or the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level 3) [Ref: 1051], or the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Machine Shearing Fine Wool) (Level 3) [Ref: 1052], for all of which this qualification is a prerequisite for award.

This qualification is part of a series developed for the wool harvesting sector. A qualification pathways diagram can be found at the end of this document.
