National Certificate in Pork Production (Husbandry) (Level 4)
NZQF Level 4

About the course

This qualification is designed for people who wish to develop a technical knowledge of pig husbandry in order to be able to communicate with, and implement the advice of, professionals such as veterinary surgeons and nutritional advisors, for the purposes of increasing pork production unit productivity and decreasing costs. They may already be working as Section Managers.

Holders of this qualification will have the skills to plan a health programme. They will also have knowledge of the composition and contribution of feed nutrients used for pigs, diet formulation, the effect of disease on pig herd productivity and disease management, and pig breeding programmes; pig genetics, breeding, and improvement; and pig reproductive organs and hormones, and factors affecting reproductive performance.

The elective set recognises the skills for managing the care of either a grower pig herd newly weaned pigs. Holders will select the standard which is applicable to their own workplace.

Candidates may already have completed the National Certificate in Pork Production (Senior Stockperson - Husbandry) (Level 3) [Ref: 1560], the National Certificate in Pork Production (Senior Stockperson - Reproduction) (Level 3) [Ref: 1561], or the National Certificate in Pork Production (Section Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 1562] prior to award of this qualification. However, completion of qualifications [Ref: 1560], [Ref: 1561], and [Ref: 1562] is not a requirement for entry to this qualification. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1560] is to allow people to further their skills in the area of pig husbandry applicable to both indoor and outdoor units. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1561] is to allow specialisation in reproduction in either indoor or outdoor operations. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1562] is for people to gain the skills to manage a section of the pork production unit as a Section Manager.

People may complete this qualification concurrently with the National Certificate in Pork Production (Section Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 1562], and then may progress to the National Certificate in Pork Production (Unit Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 1564] if they wish to further their skills to manage a total pork production unit.
