About the course
Advance your career in the farming sector targeting skills that will allow you to move into a management level position. As a graduate you will have in-depth knowledge and practical skills in farming production systems and be able to benchmark this performance. You will also be able to provide assistance with the management of environmental impacts and take responsibility for day to day management of vehicles, plant and machinery.
This programme is delivered through our partners at Smedley Station, Pukemiro and Waipaoa.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the pastoral farming sector with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to take responsibility for the day to day operational management of a pastoral farming production system.
This qualification is targeted at people who are experienced workers in the agriculture industry and are looking to move into, or are at, a management level position in an agricultural production enterprise.
Graduates of the Breeding Livestock Farming strand will also be able to:
- Benchmark performance against data
- Produce management reports
- Be responsible for maintenance of vehicles, plant, machinery and equipment
- Assist with management of environmental impacts
- Implement a livestock health, breeding and feeding plan
This qualification may build on the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Pastoral Livestock Production [Level 3][Ref: 2217], and New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Livestock Husbandry) [Level 3] (Dairy, and Meat and Fibre) [Ref: 2214].
This qualification may lead on to the New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management [Level 5].
On successful completion of the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 4), you may choose to continue with your studies to complete:
- New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management (Level 5)
- New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industries Production Management [Level 5]

Academic requirements
- Evidence of relevant knowledge and experience in a farming environment, including literacy and numeracy abilities equivalent to NCEA (Level 1). ( In this case the applicant may be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence).

A personal interview and references may be part of the application process.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on IELTS (5.5 (Academic) with no band score lower than 5.0) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents or completion of an EIT Hawke’s Bay assessment.
ENTRY WITH CREDIT
You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning.
Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.
You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.
You must apply prior to enrolment. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course.
