About the course

This qualification represents a set of foundation skills for mechanical engineering and related trades. The qual may be used as the first stage of an apprenticeship or as the basis for pre-trade courses. It is particularly relevant for people wishing to pursue careers in general engineering, machining, toolmaking, fitting, eng maintenance, fabrication and marine engineering. Holders of this qual have the following skills and knowledge relevant to the mechanical engineering industry: Hlth&Safety. Trade Mths & Mechanics. Metals & other materials used in engineering. Fasteners & assembly. Sketching. Measurement. Eng Tools. Machining operations. Welding Safety & procedures. As this qual represents a common foundation for the industry, all US are compulsory. This qual leads to trade quals in Mechanical Eng at levels 4 & 5 on the NQF and ultimately to the NatDip in Eng (mechanical Eng) Lv6 ref: 0534

Entry requirements

minimum of 3yrs sec and/or 48 or more credits at NCEA lv1 with no fewer than 12 credits in each of 4 subjects and/or Equiv NQF unit standards. OR Life Skills/Work Experience
