A stepping stone into a career in viticulture and wine science or another science-based field

The NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Pūtaiao | Science Pathway) [Level 4] aims to provide you with an introduction to science, giving you a broad understanding of key concepts and principles as well as the skills necessary to succeed at higher levels of tertiary study.

Pūtaiao Pathway: Science, for those wishing to pursue a career in viticulture and wine science, vet nursing or any other science-related field.

Gain the skills and knowledge to enter degree level study with confidence. This qualification will give you an introduction to important skills and ideas, so you’re ready to step up to higher level study; including at degree level. You’ll learn study and communication skills, together with the science background you need to progress and be successful in our viticulture and wine science programme. The courses you study will prepare you for entry into the Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Science or you may choose to enrol in a different field of science.

Outline

There are four compulsory courses, each worth 15 credits, to gain the NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Pūtaiao | Science Pathway) [Level 4].

Courses include:

  • Skills for Successful Tertiary Study. To enable students to develop essential study skills required for higher level study through a biological context.
  • Building Communication Competence. To enable students to develop oral and written communication skills.
  • Introduction to Chemistry. To develop practical skills and essential theoretical knowledge of chemical concepts for further study in science.
  • Introduction to Mathematics Excel Skills. To develop mathematical skills and computer literacy

Career Opportunities and Outcomes

As a graduate of this certificate you will be ready to enter degree or diploma level education in your chosen career pathway.

Pūtaiao | Science Pathway: Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Science, or other degree or diploma related to science.

Entry Requirements

Entry Criteria

  • Achievement of NCEA Level 2 with a minimum of 10 credits from literacy-rich subjects, OR
  • NZ Certificate in Study and Career Preparation [Level 3]

You may be asked to provide evidence of a level of literacy and numeracy sufficient to:

  1. be able to study at this level, and
  2. interpret and apply health and safety requirements.

Applicants must supply a personal statement about their background, reasons for wanting to undertake the programme and any factors that could impact on their study.

Computer literacy is highly recommended in order to be able to cope with the digital components of the courses.

Completion Time

Maximum two years unless special permission is obtained from the Head of School.

English Language Entry Requirements

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English Language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. English Language fluency can be verified by achievement of one of the following within the last two years:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied)
  • IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0
  • PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)
